Over half a million refugees have fled the conflict in Syria into neighboring countries and are now in desperate need of shelter, food, water and medical care. We're scaling up our response to help families through the harsh winter months.

The situation
With growing numbers of people fleeing the conflict in Syria and the arrival of winter in the region, the situation has become critical. The UN estimates that 4 million Syrians inside of Syria are in need of assistance, including 2 million internally displaced. In addition, over half a million refugees have been registered in neighboring countries, and it is estimated that between 2,000 - 3,000 people are fleeing Syria every day.
As well as Syrians, Palestinian refugees from Syria have fled into Lebanon and Jordan. Many refugees are living in poor and cramped conditions.
What Oxfam is doing
Distribution of blankets to refugees from Syria, in Lebanon, by Association Najdeh
In 2012, we provided food and hygiene equipment to refugees in Lebanon and Jordan. We also trained local organizations in humanitarian response in Lebanon to boost their capacity.
With the situation deteriorating, we are now scaling up our response in Lebanon and Jordan.
In Lebanon, we are currently helping Syrian and Palestinian refugees who have fled the conflict. We are increasing the number of refugees we are supporting through the cold winter months with supplies of warm clothes, mattresses, blankets, heaters, rugs, kitchen utensils, hygiene kits and plastic sheets for weather proofing. Our local partners are providing psycho-social support and counselling.
In Jordan, we are set to supply water and sanitation to refugees in camps and host communities.
