Saudi artist Abdul Aziz Aashour creates paintings in a very austere fashion, where white is the dominant color and a frugal use of colors help him to rein in his wild imagination.

One of the most distinguished artists in Saudi Arabia, Aashour participated in many fine arts activities and forums in the Arab region and the world.

"I have no idea who chooses the color white as a symbol of Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula. It really commands admiration," says Aashour. He received many honoring awards like the second prize from the Jeddah association for culture and arts, the third prize in the Kingdom's exhibition in 1988, the award of the cultural competition for the Arab states in Cairo in 1988, the first prize in the kingdom's general exhibition in 1992 and the Grand Prize of the 9th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh. Abdul Aziz Bashour is currently president of the fine arts committee in Jeddah.

Ashour's trailblazing project "Click" was borne out of a scrap collection he collected at a market.

"I took a stroll to the second-hand market and found hundreds of keyboards worth of 50 or 100 Saudi riyals, and found they could be transformed into a piece of art.

"I had a feeling that a mere click on the keyboard could open the Pandora's Box in your life," Aashour adds.

The shocking reality of his "Click" project is embodied in the way the keyboard changes its shape depending on the perception of the viewer. It is sometimes revealed in the countless number of soldiers, or lines of neglected vehicles, or just a computer keyboard.

However morbid his sense of abstractionism, employing such tools never stripped Ashour of his emotions.

Ashour's style of employing any tool within reach, and his pursuit of research, experiments and use of new technologies please the beholder. In return, his reward is always meager.

"I frequently ask the art lovers to see us from their inner souls, rather than from the chaos of the outside world," Ashour says.
