(Washington, D.C.) - Frank Jannuzi, the head of Amnesty International's Washington D.C. office, issued the following statement in response to reports that President Barack Obama will issue an executive order that will end deportation and begin granting work permits to young, undocumented immigrants who arrived as children:

"Amnesty International welcomes President Obama's steps to relieve the plight of undocumented children and their uncertain futures, but it is a temporary measure. Immigrant children and their families, and the country as a whole, deserve a permanent solution, not tomorrow or after the election, but right now."

"Amnesty International urges Congress to pass the 2011 version of the DREAM Act as well as address other urgent issues facing migrant communities and undocumented individuals."

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with more than 3 million supporters, activists and volunteers in more than 150 countries campaigning for human rights worldwide. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public, and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied.
